In northern India, five newborns less than a week old were killed and another was injured due to a fire caused by a short circuit in the hospital maternity ward where they were being treated for jaundice.
The fire started before dawn.

Five other newborns were rescued, including one with burns.
All babies are less than a week old and are treated under a physiotherapy machine.
Surinder Singh, director of the hospital, told local television: \"The tube of the machine is short-circuited . \".

Television footage showed several crying relatives outside the hospital, including some mothers in nearby rooms when the fire broke out.

Pattiara is about 30 miles south of Chandigarh, capital of Punjab in northern India.
